I had to go through Agile training for like the millionth time at work last week, and I was salty about it because I’m a certified product owner so y’know, kind of familiar with it. However, it actually turned out to be awesome, not only because of Project Kassandra (it totally helped gel some ideas for how that should work) but because the trainers did a really good job in talking about agile theory and philosophy. One of the visual aids they used was this picture:

Once you’re done marveling at what a nightmare it would be to get anywhere if you had to cross that bridge, focus in on the tiny bit of space in the lower left corner of the picture. Some managers look at that space on their teams and think “There’s room for more!” But you have to give your team space to make things happen.

That really struck a chord with me. Using SMART goals to write my sprint items forced me to stay RELEVANT to the overall goal. It made me think about in the past I definitely experience scope creep – I’m going to diet and exercise and learn to cook and implement a new skin care routine and take perfect care of my hair and…and…etc. But the point is to focus on only the items needed to reach the ultimate goal, and put the other things aside. In other words, create space for the magic to happen.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
