The weekend clinic was a rousing success, which was such a relief. I rode Ava, who is a 26 year old chestnut mare. I joke that she hates everyone – me, you even though she’s never met you, etc. But the truth is she’s a sweet old girl who aside from biting the crap out of you if you tighten the girth too fast, is a sweet gentle ride. Who, as it turns out, absolutely loves violence. I shot arrows off her, threw spears off of her, waved a sword around on her, and her only reaction was some harsh judgement when I missed. Her favorite drill was when we had to chase the instructor with a sword – she figured out the game real fast and was locked onto him like she was ready for murder. It was awesome.
I got a lot of praise for overcoming fear which was of course embarrassing, ha. The instructors were very kind and supportive but I’m still mad at myself for the last clinic…but whatever. Only way to go is up right? One thing that came to light during this is how absolutely terrible my form is when I shoot.

Why is my elbow up my nose!?
That needs to be corrected, it’s pretty amazing I have any kind of accuracy. I did a little 15 minute private lesson and got some help; but it sucks that the instructor teaches in Houston which is like a 2.5 hour drive. A bit far for an archery class. On the plus side, I talked to my bro who is a level 1 instructor and miles away better than me, and he gave me a suggested drill that I think will help a lot. I also just need to start shooting more often – I have no excuse not to. I remember when I took a lesson from Gracie she said “Shoot 20 arrows a day and you will get good.” I just need to make it more of a priority. I also need to work on speed nocking and shooting with my left hand.
In other news, Atlas found a buyer, so no extra lease, and honestly I’m glad. Mostly because I think he needs his own person to work with & develop him, but also because I don’t realistically have the time to dedicate to two leases. It looks like maybe Griffy is sound enough to ride which is wonderful – still waiting on vet confirmation but I’d much rather focus on bringing him back!
